Why are political sex scandals so common?

I don't get it. Do politicians really think they're above the law? I hate it how Larry Craig, David Vitter, and Eliot Spitzer drag out their wives to stand by them when they're "apologizing" for what they've done.

They all follow the same pattern too: get caught, make a "sorry" statement with their wives on their left or right, then resign. What is up with this?
